Curtis C. Coon is a Partner and founding principal of Coon & Cole. Mr. Coon has extensive legal experience in the Maryland community, and he has served local residents and businesses for more than 35 years. Mr. Coon is a highly accomplished practitioner in the fields of construction law, bankruptcy, commercial litigation, real estate acquisition and development, land use and financing, foreclosure, estate planning, and business transactions.
Mr. Coon has broad experience serving businesses and individuals in a variety of civil matters. Over his long and distinguished career, he has represented hotels, resorts, banks, distributors, retailers, professional corporations, real estate investors, commercial landowners, car dealerships, bars, restaurants, farms, churches, and contractors of all trades and sizes.
Mr. Coon was admitted to the practice of law in the Supreme Court of Maryland in 1978, the U.S. District Court (District of Maryland) in 1978, the U.S. Court of Appeals (Fourth Circuit), and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1992. He is licensed to practice law in both Maryland and the District of Columbia, and he often appears for bankruptcy and commercial litigation matters, among other case types. Mr. Coon is also a licensed Maryland real estate broker.
Since 1998, Mr. Coon has held Martindell-Hubble’s AV-Preeminent rating, which is the highest possible peer review rating for legal ability and ethical standards awarded by Martindale-Hubbell. Mr. Coon is a member of the Harford County Bar Association, where he served on the County Legal Education Committee. He is also a member of the Bankruptcy Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the Maryland State Bar Association’s Construction Law section.
As a proud long-term Maryland resident, Mr. Coon has a long list of community involvements. He was the Chairperson of the Planning and Zoning Commission in Havre de Grace, a board member of Main Street in Havre de Grace, an Assistant Scoutmaster at BSA, and a Camp Director at Goshen Scout Camps. After a long and distinguished career, Mr. Coon is semi-retired, dividing his time between Maryland and Marco Island, Florida.

Successfully reorganized and sold 750 apartment house units from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, returning over $1.5 million to the stockholders after payment in full to secured creditors.
Successfully reorganized timeshare Chapter 11 bankruptcy, returning over 80% dividend to the unsecured creditors.
Successfully arbitrated site condition dispute on behalf of infrastructure contractor, recovering 100% of claim.
Successfully litigated 10-day mechanics’ lien and contract overrun trial before the Circuit Court for Baltimore City on luxury condominium project on behalf of electrical subcontractor, recovering over $1.2 million, including counsel fees. Successfully argued appeal before the Court of Special Appeals, which upheld the award.
On behalf of an investor, won a jury trial in a fraud case before the Circuit Court for Cecil County, which imposed personal liability against individual member of LLC for misapplication of construction funds.
Successfully orchestrated merger and sale of large regional construction firm.
Acted as borrower's counsel in finance, refinance, sale and purchase in hundreds of millions of dollars of projects, including hotels, marinas, office and housing.
Acted as counsel to developer for annexation of over 1,000 residential units.
Acted as chief counsel for a regional construction company on various matters and disputes, including writing, reviewing and drafting of construction contracts; contract award protests to Maryland Board of Contract Appeals; claims adjustment and litigation on large heavy road construction; litigation of a bridge collapse and underlying design errors; litigation of several water and waste treatment plant claims; and advising on issues regarding the environment and disposal of construction materials.
